Kristallnacht

What is it meant by the term Kristallnacht?

Night of broken glass

When did this event occur?

November 9th and 10th 1938

How many synagogues did the programme claim were burned

267 destroyed or burned

How many Jews were claimed to have died as a result of this event?

91 murdered

How many were said to have been sent to concentration camps?

30,000

What was the reaction of the German people to this event?

They forced the Jews to pay for the cost of the event and they would disown or depot them and even banned them from attending schools basically blaming the Jews.

Kristallnacht was being planned because of this document that had been written before the event (1:20 AM November 8th) which showed us what the officials can and can’t do. The event was then preplanned because of this. Here are some examples from the document.

  1. “businesses and residences of jews may be damaged but not looted.”

  2.  “Non-Jewish businesses are to be protected from damage under all circumstances.”

  3.  “Officials are to arrest as many jews especially wealthy ones.”

  4. “For the time being, only healthy male Jews of not too advanced age are to be arrested.”

(Signed by Reinhard Heydrich,
SS Gruppenfurer)

This shows how the Jews weren’t getting anything fair on what they can’t do and can do. As a result of this, they had to cause the events of the Kristallnacht to happen.

THE NUREMBERG LAWS

  1. Provide two examples of ways in which the Nuremberg laws affected the rights of German Jews.

The Jews had lost their right to vote so that they couldn’t have a voice in what they wanted to happen.

Jewish people would not be admitted to municipal hospitals in Düsseldorf so they could not get help for free or at low prices.

  1. What other actions were taken that discriminated against Jews in Germany? (Remembering)

They were expelled from the army and the Jewish university students were not allowed to sit for doctoral exams.

  1. Why do you think that the Nazis passed these laws? (Understanding)

For the Protection of German Blood and German Honor because they wanted everyone pure.

  1. If a New Zealand government passed a law that provided for different treatment of a named racial group in New Zealand, what do you think the reaction of most New Zealand people would be? Why do you think this might be the case? (Applying)

New Zealand would not support racist laws or anything like that and not approve of this because New Zealand has many different cultures. Which makes NZ was of the countries that will accept all races. Except we do have some discrimination laws but some of them accept them and live by them.

  1. Do you think these Nuremberg laws were racist? Explain your point of view. (Evaluating)

Yeah, because it had taken away people’s rights because of their skin colour and other things which is then affecting them quite sadly.

DNA Extraction Experiment

Aim: To extract the DNA out of the kiwi fruit.

Method:

1. Mush half a kiwi fruit in a zip lock bag with a splash of water and a small teaspoon of salt.

2. Strain the solution through a cloth into a beaker.

3. Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and stir.

4. Pour into a test tube.

5. Place the test tube in a beaker filled with warm water.

6. Leave for 10mins.

7. Slowly pour 5mL of methylated spirits down the inside of the test tube.

Results:

Discussion: DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. Chromosomes are made of a molecule that is deoxyribonucleic acid that contains the instructions for a feature of yourself, for example, your hair colour is called a gene. The shape of DNA is almost like a twisted ladder but described as a double helix. DNA is made up of nucleotides in which the structure of a nucleotide is base, sugar and phosphate. We share 60% of our DNA with bananas.

Conclusion: Our experiment worked very well. We had gotten most of the kiwi fruit juices out of the kiwi fruit which made our experiment show more DNA. What I would do differently is to try a whole kiwi fruit to see what happens.

Hitler's Anti-Semitism

Today in class, we have to research Hitler's Anti-Semitism and his hate for the Jews.

  1. “The Jews were responsible for bringing negroes into the Rhineland with the ultimate idea of bastardising (lowering the quality of) the white race”.

  1. “The Jewish youth lies in wait for hours on end….spying on the unsuspicious German girl he plans to seduce....he wants to contaminate her blood and remove her from the bosom of her own people."

In his book, these 2 sentences were shown about Hitler's Anti-Semitism.

This shows how Hitler thought the Jews wanted to become more superior and that the actions needed to become more of a priority, which then he did, taking action of the events of the holocaust.
