Research Task - The Production Line

For 3 periods of business studies, we had to do a research task about the production line.

Workshop 3: How does 'Lighting & Color' enhance the story?

Atmosphere - feel, the energy around
Mood - how you feel, emotions
Location - where something is happening

artificial - man-made light, usually electrical

warm - yellow, makes feel safe, warm
cold - white/blue tone, makes feel clean, clinical

bright - fill's room, makes feel happy, safe
dull - fill's part of a space only, often creepy/murky

Colour Palette - predominant colours used in the scene.
                       (main)

Workshop 2: Linking themes to the impact of Angles, Movement and shots

Angle & Movements

* High angle - makes the character 'other Whybie' look small, weak, and vulnerable.

* POV - Other Mother - dominant & powerful
* Medium shot - gives us some idea of background but not full.

* Audience feels - powerful, we are looking down on Wybie through Other Mothers POV.
- Sad/worried for Wybie - he looks small, sad, innocent
- The first character in the 'other world' to suggest something is not right.

* Directors Purpose - makes us feel sorry for Wybie.
- makes the audience think that maybe the Other Mother isn't so nice - foreshadowing.

S.E.X.X.X.Y Paragraph

-------------------------------------------------------------
In the shot with the other Wybie and the Other Mother, high angle shots are used effectively to show the theme 'looks can be deceiving! This is demonstrated through a high angle shot from the Other Mother. She is looking down the front porch steps at a scared other Wybie. This makes the audience feel sorry for Wybie and makes the Other Mother seem powerful. The purpose of this scene was to make the audience think that maybe the Other Mother isn't so nice after all. Combined with the use of lighting, Wybie is in a warm light but surrounded by darkness, the director has created an atmosphere of caution- something is not right. This reminds the viewer of a later scene where Coraline is looking up at the Other Mother in horror as she throws her through a magical portal into a locked room. This shows that looks can be deceiving because the Other Mother wasn't nice like Coraline's first thought.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dutch Tilt - Shows that somethings is odd

POV - The POV is from the doll/sneaky that has been given to Coraline by The Real Wybie

Audience Feels - Concerned from the perspective of the doll

Additional info - music/lighting/color - Music is silenced - The lighting is dark mixed with a little cold light

In this shot with Coraline and the doll that 'The Real Wybie' has given to her was moved behind the dresser with its head rotated making it the perspective of the doll seemed like something odd is happening

Workshop 1 Unpacking Themes and ideas - Coraline

Theme/Idea - Something that links throughout the story.

'Looks can be deceiving'
- Things aren't always what they seem.

Example 1 = The Beldam/The Other Mother
- She starts off as good / Kind but is revealed to be an evil soul-devouring metal spider demon.
- Shows theme because the other mother changes gradually over time so that Coraline& audience doesn't notice.
- Important to the story because it helps the audience understand Corealine's choice then she realizes that having everything perfect won't make her happy.

Example 2 = Other World vs Real World
- The other world is a perfect web/trap to catch Coraline, whereas the real world is boring but safe.
- Shows theme because even though the other world seems better in every way, the real world is actually better/safer because it isn't a trap.
- important to help the audience understand why Coraline goes back to the real world.

S.E.X.Y Paragraph

Statement - In Coraline, themes and ideas are used effectively

Evidence - For instance, the theme 'look can be deceiving' is shown through the character of The 'Other- Mother' The Other Mother starts kind, but is revealed to be a soul-devouring demon.

eXplanation audience - This makes the audience feel that we shouldn't trust things or people that seem perfect at first glance.

eXplanation director - This was done to make the audience feel weary or develop a sense of new situations.

eXplanation compare - Coinciding with this is the use of color to show the 'Other Mother' is becoming eviler. At the start, she is surrounded by warm colors that make us feel safe, but the end it is dark with neon green which her seem dangerous

Your link - This theme is also shown, through the changes in the 'other world' as it is revealed to be a spider web designed to catch Coraline.

Arbor Day

Arbor Day

Arbor day is a holiday in which people or groups of people plant trees, and celebrate the environment and trees

Arbor day in New Zealand celebrates our natural beauty and educating our communities. We are planting a passion for the future protection and of our wondrous trees. But most importantly trees provide us oxygen to let us and animals breathe and they help stop climate crisis.

By Planting more trees and attending planting events.
Making a fundraiser for countries that need trees.
