DTE Project

For this semester in DTE, Term 4, we have been working on a project. This project was making an electronic glove that controls a game. Using a Makey Makey kit, tape and a glove. We were able to construct an electronic glove that could play games with your own hands.

Our plan and log: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lvCrzNjHfhW62h-ed1UaWHzRI5HfKlYRYJLgZsotDV8/edit

Reflection: Contructing this was a success. Our glove works only for games with arrow keys, we as a team got to show some kids that were interested in our project and let most of them have a turn. Turns out people really liked our idea and next time we would try to add a click and space button also we can play more games. Also, I would add some custom buttons to our design towards our glove.

Why was a Treaty Needed NZ - essay

In 1830 there were about 100,000 Māori and about 100 Europeans living in New Zealand. The behaviour of the Whalers, the Missionaries’ desire to help protect Māori rights and the Musket Wars were reasons that a treaty was needed. The Declaration of Independence was another contributing factor to the need for a treaty.

The Maori needed a treaty for the lawless behaviour that was involved with the British settlers like the Whalers. They were at sea at months of the time and there were an estimated 200 British + 300 more whalers which have led to some bad things when they got on shore (Kororareka). It was considered a “hellhole” to people and needed to be settled with a treaty or else it would continue on and wreak havoc. One of the ways this was causing problems is because they were buying alcohol and they got drunk. Another way this was causing problems was because the sailors would be fighting with the local people after being drunk, and finally, prostitution was happening that left things bad for the Maori women. This chaotic behaviour was indeed going around and with a treaty, this would reduce the bad behaviour because it would offer security, which could help calm things down and make the Maori and Whalers, not a hellhole.

.Another reason that a treaty was needed was to protect Māori rights. One group that felt strongly about this was the missionaries. The missionaries had a really good relationship with the Maori. The missionaries worried about the musket wars that were going between the Maori tribes. Plus if the Maori were all killed, the missionaries would’ve wasted all that time and effort. This matters because they wanted to protect the Maori since they already had a developed relationship with them. This is because they taught them their religion. They also taught them the British way of life, and eventually, some new farming techniques. A treaty would have the Maori be protected.

Another reason that a treaty was needed was the Musket Wars. In 1800, 20,000+ people were killed due to the Musket Wars. Nga Puhi were the first tribe to get the muskets which were the inspiration to getting these weapons that spread across New Zealand. They also had to use flax, food etc to be able to get these weapons. If a treaty was needed, it depends on what the treaty was; everyone already had the muskets, and also everything was balanced and I’m sure that people would’ve traded it illegally anyways.

The final reason that a treaty was needed was the existence of the Declaration of Independence.

What is the Declaration of Independence? Interestingly, on 28th of October 1885 is the date of the Declaration of Independence in New Zealand. The declaration states the sovereignty that existed in 1835 and was designed to promote and protect the rights of Maori. About 34 chiefs have signed the Declaration of Independence. It had provided a portal for the Treaty of Waitangi negotiations. It also gave them freedom because if it breaks down they would have the Crown as a backup plan as the king would gain possession if anything had gone wrong. This would boost the relationship between the Crown and Maori. This was huge for the treaty signing.

In conclusion, a treaty was needed because of the sailors/whalers, keeping the relationship between the Missionaries and the Maori, for the musket wars to end and for the declaration of independence to work better for them. This would make New Zealand have better connections with the whole world and would have good relationships closer together. This would also help with laws in New Zealand they would be able to get a government that can allow the Maori to work better. This allowed us to live with the Maori people in which they can have a voice. I think that everything went well in the end just as today is a very peaceful place. This treaty (Treaty of Waitangi) is one of the most important things in New Zealand and everyone should take notice of that.

Alien Reasearch - Where would aliens live

Aim: To make a habitat/world map of a place aliens could live

Equipment: Cardboard, paint, paintbrush, paper, scissors, glue. Paper plates, newspaper

Method

1. Cut the cardboard into a rectangular shape.

2. Glue a white piece of paper to the cardboard.

3. get out the paint and paint the paper how you want your world to look.

4. Make a UFO by getting paper plates out

5. cut paper plates to the size you want.

6. scrunch paper on top of the paper plates.

7. Paint the UFO.

8. Add more detail if wanted.

Research

It seems that no one actually knows what an alien planet would look like if they even exist. Many people seem to share a similar idea of what an alien planet would look like. Most people believe that the planet would have to be fairly similar to earth in the fact it has land and liquid of some sort (mainly water). Some people predict that the planet would look something like this

Result:

Discussion: If aliens really exist and what their world would like

Aliens could be living on a planet very far away. If they do the conditions could be similar to planet earth. So we decided to make a planet similar to earth that aliens could live on. It doesn't have to be the same conditions on earth but more different. They could have their oxygen percentage could be 100% and life would be a lot weirder on that planet.

ConclusionThe Planet we made worked successfully but it wasn't all that good for me. Next time, I would try to do something more different and try to figure out what we could do to add something to an alien planet. I found out that meteors and new life could be on planets far away.

Treaties between the US and American Indians

Today in class, I have been learning about a treaty between the US and the American Indians. The treaty I chose was the Treaty With the Delaware's/Treaty of Fort Pitt.  I have decided to do a google slide to demonstrate my learning I also added some very quick animations to my slide to make my work stand out more. Enjoy!

Volcano project

Aim: Is to make a functional and realistic volcano

Team: Lincoln, Chris and Tobey

Method750ml Water Bottle, scrunch up balls of paper dipped in PVA glue to shape the volcano then add strips of paper on top, make it smooth and then paint it. Our goal is to make it resemble Olympus Mons on Mars.

ResearchOur volcano is on the planet Mars, the reason why we chose it is because it is the biggest volcano in our solar system, it erupted twenty-five million years ago. The volcano is a shield volcano so the magma slowly flows up and flows down the sides of the volcano.

Results:

Discussion: The difference between lava and magma

Lava: is magma that reaches the surface of our planet through a volcano vent.

Magma: is composed of molten rock and is stored in the Earth's crust

How do volcanos form?
By two tectonic plates crashing together and then one going up. Since magma is under the earth's crust it rises through the volcano becoming lava.

Conclusion: Our volcano eruption worked successfully but it wasn't all that good for me. Next time, I would try to do something more different and try to figure out what makes it erupt better. I found out that the elephant toothpaste is about 100 degrees celsius when the reaction is happening/happened.

Population graph Social Studies

What was this graph about?

This graph is about the population of the European and maori in Aotearoa.

Why did you think the number of Maori changed?

Because the dieases that got introduced that we're killing them while also they're food source getting cut off.

Why did you think the number of Eurpoean changed?

The land was sold to the europeans which were leading them to Aotearoa.
